The team’s work comprises a mix of contentious and non-contentious matters for a diverse range of clients. International advice is central to our practice and we are members of the Ius Laboris international alliance of employment lawyers.
The CMI division is made up of leading advisers for creative, innovative and brand-focused businesses, offering a deep understanding of the industry sectors in which clients operate combined with real expertise across a wide range of legal services. The division consists of 36 partners and around 65 other specialist lawyers.
CMI’s lawyers have decades of experience both within the creative industries and as legal advisers with in depth knowledge and experience of the many sectors that make up the creative world, including advertising and marketing, entertainment and media, fashion, hospitality, technology, retail and sports.
THE DATA & PRIVACY TEAM AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
You will form part of the Data & Privacy team, which is an effective and cohesive cross firm, cross industry and cross sector team making up its own independent and autonomous Legal Practice Group within the firm (it sits between EIR and CMI), comprising both contentious and non-contentious lawyers from both divisions. The Data & Privacy team is currently made up of two partners, seven associates and two paralegals. The team is an energetic, informal and sociable group with an impressive client base, predominantly in the marketing, publishing, gig economy, media, retail and professional services sectors.
Work types run from policy reviews to contractual review to breach analysis and assistance to helping with data subject rights requests to high level tactical advice on international issues and data and privacy governance strategies. We also help clients with regulatory issues and undertake contentious and litigious data & privacy work and these are both growing areas of our practice.
The job holder will be part of the Data & Privacy team providing PDL support across the general areas of PDL responsibilities. This includes: assisting the team with legal research; responding to enquiries from the team; writing/editing articles; and help with supporting the team’s conference speaking and business development work.

The successful candidate is likely to be an associate (approx. 3 + years PQE), looking to move to a PDL role or currently working in a PDL role with Data & Privacy experience. Candidates must have legal qualifications and experience in UK Data & Privacy law.
The candidate should be technically excellent and commercially astute.
A team-oriented, collegiate person and effective communicator (with excellent drafting skills and presentation skills) who enjoys thought leadership, including to writing articles, delivering training internally and externally and contributing to the firm’s business development activities. Good practical knowledge of IT and Know How systems is required.
We would be willing to consider candidates with previous significant experience as Data Privacy Officers with appropriate qualifications and heavy weight experience who are looking to move into a PDL/PSL role in a law firm.
