London Underground Railway Engineering Workshops
Apprenticeship Standard: Engineering Technician
Duration:3 years 4 months
Scheme begins:September 2020
Salary:£19,941 (reviewed in line with London Living Wage)
Start Date: April 2021 at the earliest
London Underground plays an essential role in our city’s development. Our network covers 253 miles, serving 275 stations and carries more than five million passengers per day.
The role of a London Underground engineering apprentice is critical to ensuring the ongoing performance and safety of our tube network. The technological advancements we are seeing in our trains and operating infrastructure means that we need to adapt the way we maintain our assets to keep them operating at peak performance. You’ll be at the forefront of these developments whilst also keeping a watchful eye on our legacy assets across the network.
What will I be doing?
Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn from experienced and qualified staff through various placements across Workshops so as to gain a broad spectrum of knowledge through a hands-on approach to learning.
As a London Underground Railway Engineering Workshops (REW) Apprentice you will undertake regular placements at the REW Workshop and TMU Trains department at Acton. Here, after receiving high quality classroom and on the job training from our dedicated trainers, you will work alongside skilled engineers, learning how our varied train systems operate. London Undergrounds rolling stock has long since ceased to be ‘clunk click’ and is now a highly sophisticated piece of equipment requiring a raised level of technical competence to maintain it. Under constant supervision, and working as part of a team, you will learn and become proficient in both mechanical and electrical skills enabling you to help contribute to the maintenance and fault repair of our varied rolling stock and the piece parts associated, ensuring a fast turn around and playing your part in keeping London moving.

Where can this career take me?
This apprenticeship is just the start of your career, the roles and opportunities available to you are endless. You may want to progress onto an Apprenticeship at a higher level , or you may want to move into a Team Leader, Production Manager or Operational Manager role. Alternatively, you may want to remain as a hands-on engineer, growing in knowledge and experience and passing on your skills to the next generation of Apprentices.
The current Director of Engineering and Managing Director for London Underground for TfL both started as technician apprentices so it can be seen that the apprentices can aspire eventually to senior management positions.
What training and support will you get?
You’ll have an Apprenticeship Development Manager who will act as your line manager and be responsible for ensuring that the design and delivery of the Apprenticeship is fit for purpose. They will help secure the right placements for you and support you in your professional development. You’ll also have a mentor who will support and guide you by sharing their knowledge and expertise.
There will be lots of opportunities to complete additional training courses. These will vary from soft skills training to technical skills training.
A minimum of 4 GCSE’s Grade A* - C or Grade 4 and above, including Maths.Applicants with an English Language GCSE at Grade D or Grade 3 will be eligible to apply, but will be expected to achieve a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in English Language by the end of their apprenticeship.
Applicants holding the following will not be eligible to apply:
Level 3 Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering or Level 3 NVQ Certificate or Diploma in any Engineering discipline
Level 3 Knowledge qualifications in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
You must turn 18 years of age by the 1st of April 2021 to be eligible for this scheme.
PLEASE NOTE: On successful completion of your application you will be sent an invitation to complete an online test - the Situational Strengths Test. You will have exactly 7 days from the date and time of being invited to complete this test.

No extensions will be granted, therefore if you are unable to complete your test within the 7 days, we would advise you to refrain from submitting your application at this time. If you do not complete the tests within 7 days of receiving the email, you will be automatically removed from the process. Please note: The online test is not compatible with mobiles or tablets so please ensure you have access to a PC or laptop to complete your test.
