HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT
Working within Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Specialty Diagnostic Group, within the Microbiology Division (MBD), our customers worldwide trust our microbiology solutions for the diagnosis of infectious disease and detection of bacterial contamination. As the Director PMO you will lead the global functional area that has a mission to create value for MBD by the execution of strategic and tactical initiatives with excellence in Portfolio, Project and Process Management. The Director owns the Portfolio Management and the Project Management process. Thereby playing an integral part of the corporate mission to make the world cleaner, healthier and safer.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
•Partner with R&D and Marketing leadership to develop the portfolio strategy & annual operating plan, focusing on R&D utilization, in alignment with divisional strategy.
•Lead monthly review of the portfolio with the PSG, drives prioritization, status updates and revenue reporting for all New-Product-Introduction (NPI) and Product Care programs and projects.
•Partner with MBD Finance to develop and deliver analytics associated with the innovation investment including relevant metrics used for reporting purposes.
•Ensure best practices of Program and Project Management are followed by all project teams in MBD, with the goal of not only delivering products of high quality and value to the organization, but also of delivering them within the agreed-upon metrics of schedule, resources, budget and scope.
•Leadership and functional management of: Program and Project managers, Project office function and Process office function.
•Support VP R&D and contributes to the divisional monthly and quarterly business reviews (MBR and QBR) with relevant information and reporting.
•Prepare for and participate in the quarterly Portfolio Management Committee meetings with the Divisional Leadership Team.
•Develop and maintain the portfolio management system and ensure data validity via regular reviews.
•Coach and guide program and project managers to be able to lead with excellence and meet expected goals.
•Lead and develop the project management group to become world class professional project leaders.
•Lead the effort to continuously improve the MBD NPI process, both the project management model and the design control system.
•Drive change initiatives & build best practices regarding program management & product development in the division.
•Communicate standards of portfolio & program management role and responsibility, relative to grade level. Provide feedback & coaching on performance, as well as create personal development plans to improve skillsets.
•Assign project and program management resources, in partnership with R&D Leadership Team.
•Collaborate and manage expectations across functional areas in MBD on portfolio and project level.
•Ensure close alignment and visibility between group and division.
•Participate actively to improve portfolio and project management excellence.
WHAT SUCCESS WILL LOOK LIKE
•Support efficient and transparent delivery of innovative products to the Microbiology market, strengthening product position and supporting the growth strategy.
•Actively manage the project portfolio under the responsibility of the Portfolio Steering Group (PSG) ensuring valid reporting and escalation when needed.
•Uphold an effective governance structure including project gate approvals and design control adherence to secure deliveries and return of investment for all projects.
•Projects are managed as MBD projects and not as R&D projects, including all relevant functional areas from within and from outside the Division to secure quick and focused execution on strategic important initiatives.
HOW YOU WILL GET THERE
•Bachelor's degree (B. S. or B.A.), preferred in the Life Sciences.
•Several years’ combined product development and project management experience, of which a portion should be in life sciences.
•Portfolio management experience within product development.
•Demonstrated results through influence of direct and indirect reporting relationships in a matrixed environment.
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills both written and verbal and the ability to facilitate team interactions. Also, ability to influence and communicate at all levels in the organization.
•Strong skills and experience in working with IT tools for portfolio and project management as well as reporting tools like Power BI.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
•Ability to work without significant direction and can recommend modifications to overall direction of portfolio or program in order to meet divisional goals.
•Demonstrated experience working on complex, multi-faceted problems where imagination and in-depth analysis has been required.
•Experience interacting and building effective relationships with core and extended team members, functional managers and senior management.
•Demonstrated experience as a change agent with the ability to influence and communicate at all levels.
•Ability to develop and deliver professional presentations to larger groups.
•Demonstrate experience in gathering feedback on process and practice improvements & implementing necessary changes to excel.
•Strong leadership ability with the capability to leverage diverse resources, respond quickly, understand the impact of changes and decisions, facilitate agreement, build collaborative relationships and focus on customer needs.
•Portfolio or project management certification through PMI, IPMA or according to Prince or similar will be preferred.
•A strongly pro-active ‘can-do’ attitude.
