Reports to: Improvement Team Manager
Summary of the role
The Improvement Team Nurse will work as part of a support team consisting of an Improvement Team Manager, Clinical Lead, Senior Nurse and a Team Leader. The aim of the team will be to be deployed, at request from the Head of Operations or Chief Operating Officer, to a service that is in need if immediate support and/or concern. The team will quickly gain understanding of the root cause of the issues in the service, develop a plan and then work closely to support the existing team in the service to rectify all issues and to ensure that a high standard of care is provided to all service users, ensuring that the service rapidly becomes compliant in all areas of quality, as deemed by the internal audits and Company policies. The Support Team will provide training and coaching as required and will remain at the service until it becomes stable. The support will be slowly withdrawn to ensure that the service is able to maintain the high levels of quality and compliance. A weekly report detailing the progress against the service’s action plan will be completed and sent to the Head of Operations, the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Quality and the Operations Manager.
1.Act as an ambassador for the Exemplar vision, and facilitate its understanding together with the company’s aims, objectives and philosophy.
2.Lead the team from a clinical perspective working closely with the Improvement Team Manager
3.Receive instruction from the Improvement Team Manager as to which service the team is to be deployed
4.Assist the Improvement Team Manager in undergoing a root cause analysis of the issues in the service to which the team are deployed and develop a plan to address the issues
5.Work alongside the home’s Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM), Unit Managers and Nurses to understand the issues, mentor and improve quality & performance. Particularly working closely with the Unit Manager and their role:
Clinical - to promote and maintain clinical standards within the unit in the home to the satisfaction of the
Company and relevant statutory bodies
Resource Management - to utilise all company resources in a manner which achieves customer satisfaction
and cost effectiveness
General Management - to provide complementary, competent and effective general management support
•Assess client care requirements including pre-admission, admission, daily life and
•Plan care within the agreed framework
•Supervise and provide direct care to all clients
•Maintain and develop positive professional relationships with internal departments and outside
•agencies, professional and statutory bodies, to promote an effective working relationship which
•aims to enhance the quality of life of the client
•Contribute positively to the setting and development of measurable standards of care, relevant
•to the individual, and participate in the introduction and maintenance of such strategies.
•Maintain and develop a framework for clinical governance.
•Provide safe and effective process for the ordering, handling, storage, administration, recording
•and disposal of drugs.
•Maintain and uphold the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and other NMC professional
•Monitor and develop company policies to maintain compliance to current research and
•In accordance with the Health & Social Care Act 2008, the post holder will actively participate
•in the prevention and control of infection within the capacity of their role
Resource Management Responsibilities
•Provide cost-effective and safe deployment of manpower resources in accordance with client
•need within company policy and statutory requirements
•Maintain, participate and administrate an effective on-call system which supports the nurse in
•charge on duty in the event of emergency
•Maintain and develop the framework for supervision for all grades of nursing and care staff.
•Maintain and promote a system of both professional and personal development for all staff,
•which includes mandatory training. Provide training plans and records of all training
•Ensure clinical equipment is maintained and any defect reported to the appropriate person
•Maintain cost-effective controls of all clinical supplies, to include ordering, storage, stock
•rotation and correct usage
General Management Responsibilities
•Deputise for the Registered Manager/Care Manager in his/her absence
•Participate in staff recruitment, selection and retention
•Participate in the marketing of the home, and assist in maintaining the homes reputation and
•Develop and maintain own professional network
•Work within budgetary guidelines and contribute to future strategic planning
•Ensure that the service is moved quickly to a more stable position and ultimately fully compliant with the Company’s policies, procedures and internal quality and compliance audits
•Support the CNM with investigations, any safe guarding and complaints.
•Assist the CNM and Nurses in ensuring that the service is ‘CQC ready’
•Attend daily update meetings are held at the start and end of every day. These meetings should involve the Improvement Team, the Home Manager and key members of the service; should be timely and well managed and will aim to ensure that everyone is aware of progress during the day and any obstacles to moving the action plan on.
•Establish and maintain effective communication with visiting professionals at the service.
•Create and maintain a professional, empowering and supportive relationship with CNM and Nurses, ensuring they have the requisite knowledge, skills and experience to be effective in their role.
•Assist the Improvement Team Manager with reporting to the Operations Manager, Head of Operations and Chief Operating Officer at the end of each week on the status of the service, progress against the action plan and the Support Team, and any obstacles to success.
•Manage and provide regular supervisions of the Improvement Team Nurse and Team Care Leader, ensuring that any areas of development are recognised and a coaching/training plan delivered.
•Review inspection reports from all regulatory bodies. Formulate required corrective/preventative action and agree timescales with the Nurses, CNM and Home Manager. Ensure action is taken to rectify non-compliance within agreed timescales. Monitor areas of previous non-compliance and ensure they do not reoccur.
•Ensure that the Company’s Health & Safety policy is implemented and adhered to at all times.
•Carry out other duties as will, from time to time, be directed.
•Carry out all duties in a safe manner having regard for the health, safety and welfare of self, staff, service users and other persons within the home.
•Participate in On Call systems as will, from time to time, be directed.
•Undertake appropriate training and development to ensure statutory compliance and maintain appropriate professional registration.
•Participate in appraisal and supervision processes within the statutory guidelines.
•Attend statutory training.
•In accordance with the Health & Social Care Act 2008, the post holder will actively participate in the prevention and control of infection within the capacity of their role.
